TED ISTANBUL COLLEGE IN THE 2011-2012 ACADEMIC YEAR
Turkish Education Association (TED) was established under the direction of Atatürk.
Turkish Education Association was established under the direction of Atatürk on
31 January 1928 following the proclamation of the republican regime. The objectives
of the Association included building dormitories for the Turkish students; offering
scholarships to the students in financial need; and opening modern Turkish schools
as an alternative to many foreign schools which were available in Turkey in order
to equip students with both foreign language skills and essentials of the Turkish
culture.
There are 23 TED Schools under the body of the Turkish Education Association.
In 2010-2011 academic year, 23 TED schools – 22 in several parts of the country
and 1 in the Northern Cyprus- provide education. TED Istanbul College is one of
these schools. In addition, the issue concerning the inauguration of TED University

made.
The fundamental principle of TED Istanbul College Foundation is to Invest its revenue
in Education.
TED Istanbul College Foundation was founded in 1997 under the leadership of TED
Ankara College alumni who live in Istanbul and with the contributions of TED and
Ankara College Association. One of the most significant responsibilities of this

principle, is to provide equal educational opportunities to the successful students

FOREIGN LANGUAGE EDUCATION AT TED ISTANBUL COLLEGE
The key feature of TED Istanbul College is that it places great importance on foreign
language education. Therefore, in 2010-2011 academic year, there are 27 expatriate
teachers who teach English, French, German, Mathematics, Science, Music and Art
in the school.
In the Kindergarten and Elementary School, the English classes are given by a native-speaker
and Turkish English teacher. In the High School, the English classes are given by
native-speaker English teachers.
Kindergarten
The 4-5 years-old children are taught English by native-speaking teachers through
fun activities such as rhymes, songs, games, story-telling and dramatization. Thus,
the children have the opportunity to use English in real-life settings in order
to communicate with their native-speaker teachers while the subjects are being covered.
This program is not limited to certain class hours. The Music, Art and Physical
Education classes are provided in English as well. In addition to weekly 10 hours
of English classes, the English teachers accompany the 6 years-old children at lunch,
during play times, art activities and Mathematics classes. Furthermore, 1 hour of
Music class is offered in English.
Elementary School
Grades 1-5 are given 13 hours; 6th graders are given 10 hours; and 7th and 8th graders
are given 9 hours of English classes a week. In Grade 1, the English courses are
provided by two English teachers simultaneously. Grades 2 and 4 have 2 hours of
split classes a week and Grades 6-8 have 4 hours of split classes a week. Foundation
courses are offered to the students suggested by the administration or to those
who wish to join that program during summer free of charge. In Grades 1-2-3, one
hour of Music and Art classes is given by native-speaker teachers. The songs, rhythmic
games, music and art terminology are taught by the native-speaker teachers. The
subjects covered in the bilingual English classes in Grades 1-5 are chosen among
the subjects that the students learn in Social Studies or Mathematics classes in
Turkish and among the subjects that the students are interested in. And these subjects
are covered in English. In Grades 6, 7 and 8, the Mathematics and Science classes
are given in English one hour a week.
High School
The prep students are offered 20 hours of English classes a week. The 9th graders
are provided 9 hours of English classes and 2 hours of extra English courses a week.
The 10th, 11th and 12th graders are given 4 hours + 2 extra hours of English classes
a week. Plus, the Science and Mathematics classes are taught in English. Foundation
courses are offered to the students suggested by the administration or to those
who wish to join that program during summer free of charge. In High School prep
classes, 3 hours of Science and 2 hours of Mathematics classes a week are given
in English. In grades 9, 10 and 11, the Mathematics and Science classes are taught
in English. And in Grade 12, these courses are given in both Turkish and English
since the students are preparing for the university exam.
As a result of the intense and high-quality foreign language education, some overseas
universities directly accept our graduates without asking them to submit the result
of any English proficiency exam like TOEFL.
